Are you worried about abdominal muscles and back pain after pregnancy?

You could be suffering from DIASTASIS RECTI

At Chiropractic Dubai we deal with many patients with all kinds of musculoskeletal problems.  Women should be aware of this condition called Diastasis Recti.   This is the separation of at least 2 cm of the abdominal muscle, in particular the rectus abdominis muscle. This disruption of the abdominal wall usually happens in the midline of the abdominal muscle at the linea alba.

The condition occurs in new born babies, but is mainly very common in pregnant women. In babies Diastasis Recti occurs when the rectus abdominis (abdominal muscles) do not fully develop before birth and may not be sealed together at midline. With babies in extreme cases this condition can be corrected with surgery.

In pregnant women this condition occurs during and after pregnancy caused by the stretching of the rectus abdominis (known as the “six-pack” abdominal muscle). Diastasis Recti during pregnancy may occur due to the effects of hormonal changes in the connective tissues. The areas of separation can be seen at the upper, lower or at the level of the umbilicus or navel. It is more common with women who have had several pregnancies which puts strain on these stomach muscles due to repeated episodes of stretching.

What happens if you have Diastasis Recti?
•Increased lower back pain
•Pelvic instability or SI Joint Dysfunction
•Increases stress and/or urinary incontinence (small pee when you laugh, cough or sneeze)
•Reduces the integrity and functional strength of the abdominal wall and pelvic organs

This disorder in some patients can be visible and some may find that no matter how many sit-ups they do they can’t get rid of the pregnancy tummy.

In some women the effects of Diastasis Rectic can cause serious lower back pain, this is due to the weakness of the abdominal muscles making the whole pelvic and lumbar spine area lose stability and become weak. While pregnant the presence of severe Diastasis Recti can be a threat to the safety and protection of the fetus during gestation. In a much severe separation, a possible herniation of the internal organs of the abdomen through the linea alba can occur which can be treated with surgery. Toned abdominal muscles before pregnancy can prevent Diastasis Rectic and lower back pain.
